NEW YORK (AP) — Broadcast television will have 16 gay and bisexual regular characters in prime-time series this fall, more than double the seven of a year ago, a new study has found.
The number of regular characters fitting the definition fell from 40 to 32 on mainstream cable networks, a count that doesn't include the gay-oriented networks Logo and here! There were no lesbians among the regular characters, according to GLAAD. But there are five bisexual women, including the characters of Callie Torres and Erica Hahn on ABC's "Grey's Anatomy."

Patrick Dempsey has revealed the secret to spicing up his sex life: spanking.
The Grey's Anatomy star, who has three children with wife Jillian Fink, says he keeps the romance alive by experimenting in the bedroom.
He explains, "Romance is an atmosphere, a feeling, a mood, a place, it's in the air. It is the little things - even a spanking every now and then!
"It is hard to define romance other than going with the clichés of a lake, a boat, a picnic basket and a sunset."
He added, "Certain cities are so exciting because they promote being physical in public.
"Paris, New York and Rome are fun to visit. But then there is the Italian countryside, Tuscany and Florence, where everyone is romancing."

LOS ANGELES (AP) — First came the achingly romantic hilltop reunion between Dr. McDreamy and Meredith that ended last season's "Grey's Anatomy." Is heartbreak next?
"We ended last season with the end of the fairy tale," said series creator Shonda Rhimes. "I always thought this season was about what happens after the `happily ever after,' for all our characters."
"For some, it's about jumping off into something new. It feels like a very fresh start for everybody," Rhimes said. The ABC show's two-hour season debut is 9 p.m. EDT Thursday.

In answer to questions from Waxword, the guild acknowledged last week that it is holding millions of dollars in unclaimed residual payments owed to actors, both members and non-members of the union.
While noting that this is a large sum, a lawyer for SAG said that the guild has been unable to locate performers who have moved, or are unable to pay actors whose financial affairs may be in dispute.
“When performers move or change professional representation, they may fail to inform SAG of the new contact information,” said Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, general counsel for the guild. “For others there may be legal disputes over their residuals, including business disputes or family law issues.”

That leads to a new question as the ABC medical drama opens Season 5 (Thursday, 9 ET/PT): What happens after happily ever after? For Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and Derek (Patrick Dempsey), being a committed couple is hardly the end of the story, creator Shonda Rhimes says.
"They've never had the chance to get past the 'Will they, or won't they?' and be in the 'What happens now?' part of it," she says. "There's a lot of humor and pathos and pain to be played in what it's going to mean for the two of them to really be together."
Dempsey says the two are "always going to have conflict. They're always going to be working on issues."
In addition, "for good" doesn't necessarily go past this season, Rhimes says. "But they're definitely together for good for now. I'm with them. They believe they are together for good. I believe they are together for good."
