'Private Practice' adds showrunners

Robert Rovner and Jon Cowan have been tapped as executive producers/showrunners on ABC's drama "Private Practice."  The ICM-repped writers succeed Marti Noxon, who was brought on to run the show for its freshman season and is now moving on to other projects.

Creator Shonda Rhimes will remain the lead creative voice of the "Grey's Anatomy" spinoff, which was renewed for a second season.

While there is little intrigue about ABC's upfront presentation -- expected to feature only a couple of new scripted entries, drama "Life on Mars" and comedy "Scrubs" -- the guessing game continues about what pilots will make the cut at CBS and Fox.

'Grey's Anatomy': Who cares if Meredith and Derek reunite?
[info]wtlfan
Am I the only person on the planet who doesn't care if Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and Derek (Patrick Dempsey) get back together? I mean, of the millions of "Grey's Anatomy" viewers, of course. Many, many denizens of Earth don't even know the show exists. (Yes, it's true, all those magazine covers to the contrary.)

I know showrunner Shonda Rhimes has been beating the "reunited" drum like it's the answer to all our prayers, but, frankly, I feel like it may be a case of too little too late. Poor old Derek has been pushed and pulled so many times, in so many different directions that it's hard to think of him as McDreamy anymore. He's more like McWishywashy. And Dempsey is back on the big screen in a fairly big way, so you have to wonder how long he's planning to stick around ye olde Seattle Grace.

Dempsey was entered to compete at The Glen in 2007 as part of the KONI Challenge Series but withdrew at the last second due to a conflict associated with a movie he was shooting for SONY.

'GREY' SKIES AHEAD?

CODE BLUE: THURSDAY HIT LOSING VIEWERS FAST

May 9, 2008 -- 'GREY'S Anatomy" needs some medical attention - stat!

The once mega-popular hospital drama starring Ellen Pompeo and Patrick Dempsey - which turned "McDreamy" into a household phrase - has been hemorrhaging viewers since its post-writers'-strike return last month.

At least 1 million viewers are fleeing the show each week.

"Not all the viewers have come back post-strike," says industry analyst Brad Adgate of Horizon Media.

That's an understatement.

From The Advocate: Q&A with Patrick Dempsey
[info]wtlfan
It’s somehow fitting that his new wedding-themed romantic comedy is titled Made of Honor, because during a heated argument on the set of ABC’s hit series Grey’s Anatomy in 2006, Golden Globe–nominated star Patrick Dempsey reportedly defended his gay costar T.R. Knight when Isaiah Washington called Knight a “faggot.” That scuffle, which won Dempsey the hearts of gay men everywhere, was an off-limits topic for our interview, but the McDreamy 42-year-old Versace model did say “I do” when I popped the questions about his feminine side and why -- at least when it comes to People’s Sexiest Man Alive -- he’s always a bridesmaid, never a bride.

Tweaking the plot of My Best Friend’s Wedding, your character in Made of Honor acts as his best girlfriend’s Maid of Honor so that he can sabotage her wedding. Has it always been your dream to play the “Julia Roberts” roles?
They’re a lot of fun to do. Growing up, I never had the chance to go to the movies much, so everything that I would see was probably on PBS. They would do classic comedies -- a lot of Cary Grant, Errol Flynn stuff -- and all the slapstick really appealed to me. We really wanted to pull from that.

She's met practically every member of the Grey's Anatomy staff, including Kate Walsh, Eric Dane, Sara Ramirez and Chandra Wilson, and now Rachael welcomes the dreamiest doctor at Seattle Grace ... Patrick Dempsey! To make the moment even more memorable, he makes his way out on to the stage while juggling with the Flying Karamazov Brothers. "I'm very impressed!" Rachael says.

Patrick's hidden talent is showcased in his latest romantic comedy, Made of Honor, as he juggles dinner plates in one scene. They filmed for a month in England, giving him enough time to bring his wife, 6-year-old daughter and young twin boys along for the shoot. "My daughter got to ride horses so that was a lot of fun," he says. "It was a great summer vacation for us."

When they're at home, Patrick sneaks in some extra time with his wife Jillian, a hair professional, as she gives him his haircuts. "It's a great time for us to actually sit down and talk with each other and plan on what we need to do with the family," he says. "That's our ritual, and then we pretend we're in the barber shop and get flirty."

But will his Grey's Anatomy character ever get flirty again with Dr. Meredith Grey? "I want them to get together. I really do," says Patrick, who offers some clues to their future. "At the end of this season something happens," he says, noting he hopes his character joins Meredith in therapy. "They could work on their issues together." As fans await the outcome, Patrick says he and his co-star are just as eager for more romance. "Ellen [Pompeo] and I are ready. We're like, 'Please can't we just get together?'"
